Privacy Policy

Your data walks with you.

The short version: your step count powers your screen time, the apps you block never leave your device, and we don't sell anything to anyone. Ever.

Last updated: July 12, 2026

This Privacy Policy explains what information Stepsie ("Stepsie", "we", "us") collects when you use the Stepsie iOS app and the stepsie.app website, how we use it, and the choices you have. We designed Stepsie to collect the minimum we need to make the product work, and to keep the most sensitive parts on your device entirely.

What we collect

Account information

Stepsie uses Sign in with Apple. We receive the name and email address you choose to share (which can be Apple's private relay address), plus a random account identifier. That's the whole account.

Step and activity data

With your permission, Stepsie reads your step count from Apple HealthKit. Step totals are used to calculate the screen time you've earned, and are synced to our servers so your balance, streaks, trends, and leaderboard standing work across reinstalls and appear to friends you've added. We only read steps. We never write to HealthKit, and we never access other health records.

Per Apple's rules and our own: HealthKit data is never used for advertising or marketing, and is never shared with third parties for their own purposes.

Screen-time choices: these stay on your device

Shielding is built on Apple's Screen Time technology (Family Controls, Managed Settings, and Device Activity). Apple designed these frameworks so that the list of apps you choose to block is an opaque token that we cannot read and cannot transmit. Which apps are in your Vault, when shields go up, and what you do inside blocked apps never leaves your iPhone. We couldn't peek if we wanted to, and we don't want to.

Usage and purchase data

  • Economy events: minutes earned, banked, and spent; streak and freeze status; friend-code connections. These power your Time Bank and the leaderboard.
  • Diagnostics: basic crash reports and performance data via Apple's built-in, opt-in mechanisms.
  • Purchases: subscriptions are processed entirely by Apple. We receive a receipt confirming your subscription status, never your payment details.

What we never do

  • We never sell your data. There is no version of this we do.
  • We don't run third-party advertising or ad trackers.
  • We can't see which apps you block (see above).
  • We don't read your messages, photos, browsing, or anything else outside the step counts you grant us.

How we use your information

  • To run the core loop: steps in, screen time out.
  • To sync your balance and streaks across devices and reinstalls.
  • To show leaderboards to friends you've explicitly connected with via friend codes.
  • To fix crashes and improve the app.
  • To respond when you email us.

Where your data lives

Our backend runs on Amazon Web Services in the United States. Data is encrypted in transit (TLS) and at rest. Access is limited to what the service needs to operate.

Retention and deletion

We keep your data while your account is active. You can delete your account any time in Settings → Account → Delete Account inside the app, which permanently removes your account and synced data from our servers within 30 days. You can also email hello@stepsie.app and we'll do it for you. Health data on your device is controlled by you through the Health app, and Screen Time settings clear when you remove the app's permissions or delete the app.

Your rights

Depending on where you live (including under GDPR and CCPA/CPRA), you may have rights to access, correct, export, or delete your personal information, and to object to certain processing. Email us and we'll honor them. We extend the same rights to everyone regardless of location.

Children

Stepsie is not directed to children under 13 (or the minimum age in your region), and we don't knowingly collect their data. If you believe a child has created an account, contact us and we'll delete it.

Changes to this policy

If we change this policy in a meaningful way, we'll notify you in the app before the change takes effect. The "last updated" date at the top always reflects the current version.
